The Road to Sleeping Better for Millennials

This is a 24-hour culture we live in. And millennials, the generation that thrives the most in this fast-paced world, is split between their need to sleep and their desire to stay awake. Sleep is for the weak, they say. Or is it?

The millennial generation is tired, and the lack of sleep is making them even unhealthier, while also compromising their performance at work or in school. A report by Forbes showed that only 29% of millennials regularly get sufficient sleep. Another alarming study revealed that 71% of the young generation wake up worrying about something at three nights a week.

A lot of things are stressing out our millennials — bad habits, work pursuits, personal issues, the Internet, finances, etc. This makes even sleeping a difficult task. There’s always so much to do and so much to think about, causing sleep deprivation among millennials.

Lights out early

Easy sleep is not impossible to achieve, but if you are already having a difficulty of getting zzzz’s to begin with, you can’t expect to be asleep within five minutes of turning the lights off. Any kind of light — from the monitors, smartphone or even just that red standby light on the TV, can lessen your chances of falling asleep faster. So get away from the screens, draw the blackout curtains, and turn off the lights at least an hour before going to sleep. Your mind needs to be reminded that it is bedtime, and it should stop from being alert.

Change sleeping habits

The struggle for a refreshing sleep is not a walk in the park. There are several things that you need to change in your lifestyle, such as bad sleeping habits.

Do you often hit a coffee shop after work hours? You would need to change that if you plan on sleeping early. Avoid caffeine and nicotine within three hours of bedtime. It is also not advised to drink alcohol before bedtime because while it can lull you to sleep faster, your sleep is likely to be disrupted.

Late dinner at 9:00 PM? If you eat too close to bedtime, your sleep is likely to be disrupted, apart from it not being a healthy habit. When you’re full when you go to bed, your stomach acids will keep going and may creep up into your throat.

The snooze button is not your friend. The more you delay waking up, the more you mess with your body clock, and you end up feeling even more anxious.

Finally, don’t adopt a sleeping routine only to break it off on weekends. Sleep and wake up at the same time every day. Depriving yourself of sleep during work days and then binging on sleep on weekends is never a good idea.

Invest in a good mattress

Millennials have big dreams and they invest in it — a car, a house, travel, gadgets, personality training, education, etc. But the one thing that they often overlook is investing in their health, including the investment of a good night’s sleep.

The right mattress can make your life better in so many ways. The things you have to look for in a mattress can be broken down into two: comfort and support. The Perfect Serenity Collection, a range of Uratex Premium mattresses, was designed to deliver both.

If your idea of dreamland is floating in feather-light clouds, the Perfect Serenity Chimera is what you are looking for. It is soft and cushiony on the surface, but firm underneath. It is topped with convoluted premium foam for better air circulation, while its egg crate design helps alleviate pressure points. For medium-firm mattress, the Perfect Serenity Mirage balances softness and firmness. It uses two layers of foam, one for cushiony comfort and the other for real support. The Perfect Serenity Dream is extra firm to allow your body to naturally align. This is advised for people who suffer from back pains while sleeping.

Cool down

It is important to maintain a cool environment if you want to sleep easily. Keeping the temperature at 25 degrees to 24 degrees Celsius is ideal. This is because the body’s temperature naturally goes down at night, telling our body that it is time to rest.

A mattress that infuses a cooling technology will also help. The mattresses in the Perfect Serenity Collection use a 3D spacer fabric for its side panels that ensures better ventilation, perfect for the warm weather. It will help you sleep well and wake up feeling refreshed.

Worry not, write them down

Millennials, as they make names for themselves in the workplace, worry about many things. They worry about the presentation to the boss, they email constantly, they are part of many chat groups, they worry about deliverables in the office, and even the co-worker that’s been giving him/her a hard time. If you need to finalize a presentation, send emails or talk to a co-worker, it is best to write them down for your to-do list the next day. Because the truth is, at 11:00 PM, what are you going to do about it?

Should you need to run errands the next day, there’s no sense thinking about them the night prior. If there are things that you keep worrying about such as family issues or debt, write down how you intend to go about them. Release these worries, and you’ll feel so much lighter.

Millennials are tired and stressed out. They have a lot on their plate, and the usual consequence is that sleep takes a back seat. But doing so makes other factors in a millennial’s life suffer such as general health and well-being, productivity, creativity, and personal relationships. Finding ways to improve a millennial’s sleeping habits is surely a big step towards the right direction.
